Yeah, so the cats out the bag. I have a slight Frida Kahlo obsession. After watching the film Frida a few years back with actress, Salma Hayek portraying Frida, I developed this urge to know more about her life and her art. I am guilty of having photos of her plastered on my desk top, my twitter background and I like almost every picture blogged and reblogged on Tumblr.
What I’ve taken from the film and the research that I’ve done on Frida is that she was a no-nonsense, care free, realist. She was also a woman who suffered greatly, which showed up a lot in her paintings. From her physical pain to her emotional roller coaster of a marriage to fellow artist, Diego Rivera – Frida handled it all with such grace and that’s why I dig her.
Some of my favorite Frida Kahlo quotes:
- I was born a bitch. I was born a painter.
- There have been two great accidents in my life. One was the trolley, and the other was Diego. Diego was by far the worst.
- I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.
- At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.
